Firstly, it's a pretty early performance, recorded in the summer of 1977. In my opinion, a very powerful and very "punk" time period for The Clash . Secondly, the performance is very high energy. And finally, the sound quality is pretty nice considering it's an audience recording. As good as it sounds, it's still an audience recording, and it sucumbs to some of the detrimental effects plaguing such recordings. The noise level is moderate and there is a fair amount of distortion. Also, the frequency response is unbalanced, the main detriment to the sound. It's a natural effect however, given the distance from the stage (which sounds fairly close, thankfully), the level of lows, mids and highs being emitted from the stage, onto the floor and all around the venue (given it was an indoor show), and the quality of the recording device used. In remastering this recording, no noise reduction has been used whatsoever. I have rebalanced the frequency response to what I would consider to positive results. Each channel has been altered seperately as they contain different audio information. This makes the recording stereo, though the field is very narrow, since the recording equipment more than likely is done from some kind of stereo mic. Regardless, it's a nice effect for a recording of this nature. I also altered the amplitude of each track. It's hard to tell whether the overall level or volume at the show fluctuated or the taper changed the level, purposely or otherwise. Perhaps he moved around a bit during the show? Anyways, I've adjusted the levels accordingly. If you haven't heard this show before, get ready for a nice drop into classic Clash territory in all their late 70's punk rock glory!
